Root Canal Treatment
A root canal is a dental procedure aimed at saving a tooth that has become infected or severely decayed. During the procedure, the infected pulp inside the tooth is removed, the root canals are cleaned, shaped, and sealed to prevent further infection. This treatment helps alleviate pain, preserve the tooth’s structure, and restore normal function to the affected tooth.
What is it?
A root canal is a dental procedure performed to treat an infected or inflamed pulp inside the tooth. The pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, can become infected due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma. During a root canal, the dentist or endodontist removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals them to prevent further infection.
Whats included
- Anesthesia: Administering local anesthesia to ensure the procedure is pain-free.
- Pulp removal: Carefully removing the infected or inflamed pulp from the tooth.
- Canal cleaning and shaping: Thoroughly cleaning and shaping the root canals to prepare them for filling.
- Sealing and restoration: Filling and sealing the root canals with gutta-percha and restoring the tooth’s structure with a filling or crown to strengthen it and prevent future complications.
What happens?
In the first part of the procedure, the dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth and surrounding area, ensuring the patient’s comfort throughout. They then create an opening in the tooth to access the infected pulp and carefully remove it using specialized instruments. After cleaning the root canals to remove bacteria and debris, the dentist shapes the canals to prepare them for filling. A biocompatible material called gutta-percha is used to fill the cleaned and shaped root canals, sealing them to prevent reinfection. Finally, the tooth is typically restored with a filling or a crown to protect it and restore its function. Post-procedure care involves managing any discomfort and following up with the dentist for further evaluation of the tooth’s healing.
