Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom tooth removal is a surgical procedure aimed at extracting problematic third molars that may cause pain, infection, or dental crowding. It typically involves local anesthesia to numb the area, followed by careful extraction by a dentist or oral surgeon.
What is it?
Whats included
- Anesthesia: Local or general anesthesia is used to numb the area and ensure the procedure is pain-free.
- Surgical extraction: Accessing the tooth through gum tissue incision and possibly bone removal, followed by careful extraction.
- Stitches: Sometimes necessary to close the surgical site and aid in healing, especially for impacted wisdom teeth.
- Post-operative care: Instructions for managing pain, swelling, and avoiding certain activities to promote healing and prevent complications such as dry socket.
What happens?
During wisdom tooth removal, the dentist or oral surgeon begins by administering local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth or teeth. In more complex cases or for multiple extractions, general anesthesia may be used to ensure the patient’s comfort. The dentist then accesses the tooth by making an incision in the gum tissue and possibly removing any bone covering the tooth. Using specialized instruments, they carefully extract the tooth from its socket. After extraction, stitches may be placed to close the surgical site and promote healing. Patients are provided with aftercare instructions, which typically include guidelines for managing discomfort, swelling, and instructions on diet and oral hygiene to prevent complications.

Quick tip
- If your dentist gives you advice about daily dental care like teeth brushing techniques and how often you should floss, write it down. It takes time to build a new habit – some say 21 days or more. In the meantime, here’s a handy idea. Stick your note about your new dental care routine on your bathroom mirror as a daily reminder.
