Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure designed to lighten the color of teeth and reduce stains and discoloration. It can be performed in-office by a dentist using bleaching agents or at home with dentist-supervised kits.
What is it?
Teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching, is a cosmetic dental procedure aimed at lightening the color of natural teeth without removing any tooth surface. It is a popular treatment to enhance the appearance of teeth that have become discolored or stained over time due to factors such as aging, consumption of certain foods and drinks (e.g., coffee, tea), smoking, or poor oral hygiene. Tooth whitening procedures can be performed either at a dental office or at home using dentist-prescribed methods.
Whats included
Initial Assessment: Before starting the whitening procedure, your dentist will assess your oral health to ensure you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening. This may include examining your teeth and gums and discussing your dental history and expectations.
Professional Cleaning (Optional): Some dentists recommend a professional cleaning prior to teeth whitening to remove any surface stains and tartar buildup, which can optimize the results of the whitening treatment.
What happens?
During the teeth whitening procedure, whether in-office or at-home, the bleaching agent (typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) penetrates the enamel to break down stains and discoloration molecules. In-office treatments often involve the use of a protective barrier or gel to shield the gums and soft tissues from the bleaching agent, ensuring safety and minimizing sensitivity.
For at-home whitening, you’ll follow your dentist’s instructions for applying the bleaching gel to the custom-made trays and wearing them for the specified duration. Over the course of treatment, you’ll notice gradual improvement in the shade of your teeth, achieving a brighter and more youthful smile.
